Hayes stared at me with narrowed eyes. “I know I’m going to be extra busy but it’s not like we won’t be able to see each other again.”

My lips parted in an attempt to tell him the truth but the words wouldn’t form. I couldn’t do it.

“Well, I know but I’m busy training Gina now and I guess, I don’t know, I just got overwhelmed with everything,” I said as if that would somehow explain things. There wasn’t any of it that was a lie.

“Hey,” Hayes said wrapping his arms around me. “It’s going to be okay. I’ll figure all this stuff out, I promise. Maybe I’ll be able to convince my dad to hire someone to help me and Linus deal with everything. Hell, I can’t keep up with only getting a few hours of sleep a night. I don’t know how he did it other than practically not spending time with anyone.”

My head bobbed up and down but all I could think about was what a terrible friend and person I was. I should have had the guts to tell him the truth but I had to remind myself that I was protecting him.

It was for the best. Although if the situation were reversed, I would have wanted him to tell me.

“Okay,” I said forcing a smile.

“Maybe it would help if you talked to Linus. He’ll be more likely to listen to the President’s daughter.” Hayes shook his head. “I shouldn’t have asked that of you, I’m sorry.”

“No, it’s fine. I know you are only watching out for him. I’ll talk to him,” I said even though I had no idea what I’d actually say considering I supported what he was doing. “So, are we good?”

“What? Yeah, of course, we are,” Hayes said. “We were never not good.”

I bit back a frown. “It felt not good.”

“I’m always going to be on your side, no matter what,” Hayes said. “I really need to get some sleep though.”

“Are you going to leave?” I asked.

“I don’t have to.” Hayes widened his eyes as he looked me up and down. “But I do have to sleep.”

I stood on my tiptoes and placed a kiss on his cheek. “Go on, I’ll join you in a minute.”

“Okay,” Hayes said giving me a quick squeeze before pulling his shirt off again. “Don’t be long.”

“I won’t be,” I said as my stomach grumbled loudly at the sight of the food still on the kitchen counter.

I took several bites of the cold food before packing up the leftovers. It was strange having someone waiting in my bedroom for me. I’d always cherished living along and having my bed to myself but tonight was different.

After everything, I still didn’t want to be alone and there wasn’t anyone in the city I would have rather had in my bed.

Inside my bedroom, Hayes was already asleep only half covered. It was like he’d fallen asleep before he’d even hit the mattress.

I quickly slipped into my pajamas and crawled into the bed.
